1968 yılında Ankara’da doğdu. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nden1992 yılında mezun oldu. Aynı üniversitede Nöroloji uzmanlık eğitimini1997 yılında ve Temel Nörolojik Bilimler doktorasını 2001 yılında tamamladı. 2001-2004 yılları arasında Fulbright bursiyeri olarak doktora sonrası çalışmalarını Harvard Üniversitesi’nde sürdürdü. 2004-2014 yılları arasında akademik hayatına Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi ve Nörolojik Bilimler ve Psikiyatri Enstitüsü’nde devam etti. 2004 yılında Doçentlik ve 2011 yılında Profesörlük ünvanını aldı. 2004-2014 yılları arasında Nörobilim doktorasının yapılandırılması, araştırma laboratuvarlarının kurulması ve Nörolojik Bilimler Enstitüsü Müdür Yardımcılığı görevlerinde bulundu. 2014-2024 yılları arasında Koç Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde çalıştı. Koç Üniversitesi’nde Nöroloji Anabilim Dalı başkanlığı, Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü Müdürlüğü ve Tıp Fakültesi Dekan Yardımcılığı görevlerinde bulundu. Özdemir sinirbilim alanında özellikle migren ve inme oluş mekanizmaları ve tedavileri üzerindeçalışmalarını sürdürmektedir. Beyin kan akımı, mikrodolaşım, kan beyin bariyeri ve tüm bu yapıların nörolojik hastalıklar özellikle demans üzerine etkileri son yıllarda yoğun çalıştığı alanlardır. Bu çalışmaları Science, Nature Medicine gibi yüksek impaktlı dergilerde yayınlanmıştır. Bilim akademisi asli üyesi olarak 2024 yılında seçilmiştir. Çok sayıda Tübitak ve Tüseb proje yürütücülüğü, COST aksiyon başkan yardımcılığı vardır. Tübitak Bilim Teşvik, Eczacıbaşı Bilim Teşvik, TÜBA GEBİP, Koç Üniversitesi Araştırma ödülü gibi pek çok ödül ve bursa layık görülmüştür. YÖKAK ile çalışmalarda bulunmuş, özellikle sağlık bilimleri enstitülerinin etiket süreçlerinin oluşturulması, değerlendirme kitapları ve dökümanlarının hazırlanmasında ve YÖKAK değerlendiricisi olarak saha çalışmalarında yer almıştır.
